13 Ghostly events to celebrate Alabama's haunted history

Visitors can experience Alabama’s haunted history in October with ghost trails, story-telling festivals and ghost walks.

A variety of events and trails pay homage to the state’s ghostly history including a rare moonlit tour of the famous ghost town Old Cahawba where paranormal investigators will showcase their ghost hunting equipment. In Montgomery a mortician will take you on a tour of Oakwood Cemetery in a hearse. The Black Belt Ghost Trail showcases dozens of haunted sites that include homes, restaurants, cemeteries and Civil War sites.

The Alabama Tourism Department offers the following list of 13 ghostly events taking place this month across the state.

This annual Historic Haunts Walk, held each Tuesday night in October, begins at the Athens Visitors Center and includes tales of paranormal activity at 13 local structures.

Postal Service truck carjacked in Bullock County

Postal Service truck carjacked in Bullock County

BULLOCK COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - The United States Postal Service is saying "Return to Sender" after one of its postal trucks was carjacked in Bullock County.

According to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the USPS and Bullock County Sheriff's Office are investigating the carjacking of a U.S. Postal Service truck. The incident happened between 4:20 and 4:30 Wednesday afternoon on Alabama Highway 110 near the Fitzpatrick Post Office.

A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the robbery of any officer or employee of the Postal Service while engaged in or on account of the performance of his or her official duties.

Information can be called in to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service National Law Enforcement Communication Center, NLECC, at 877-876-2455, option 2.

Vehicle explosion rocks Union Springs

   A Nissan Pathfinder filled with inflated balloons exploded about 12:30 Sunday afternoon, March 20, 2011, injuring two persons. Janice Broaden’s vehicle had been filled with inflated balloons that were to be used at a baby shower. She had driven to the parking lot of the Nutrition Site and was outside her vehicle when the explosion occurred.

   Mrs. Broaden was seriously injured in the explosion and is in UAB Hospital in Birmingham in intensive care suffering second degree burns, according to Investigator Louis Murry. She was taken via RCS Ambulance.

   Ms. Elaine Taylor was standing a short distance away when the explosion occurred. She was taken to the Bullock County Hospital suffering with minor injuries. She was not hospitalized.
