Medical AIDS Outreach of Alabama to hold ribbon cutting on Friday

Medical AIDS Outreach of Alabama (MAO), formerly Montgomery AIDS Outreach, Inc., is pleased to announce a ribbon-cutting at the newest facility, located at 2900 McGehee Road.  The building is equipped to provide comprehensive primary healthcare for those living with HIV, free HIV testing, and HIV/AIDS education, referral, and support services. The January 13 event will include brief remarks at 11:45 a.m. by Michelle Vilamaa, CEO, and other area partners.  The 12:00 ribbon cutting coordinated through the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce will be followed by facility tours and light refreshments.

The organization was founded as Montgomery AIDS Outreach in 1987.  Expanded service and coverage area prompted the recent Board of Director’s approval of the new Medical AIDS Outreach of Alabama moniker.  The agency serves a 26 county area with physical locations in Montgomery and Dothan and satellite offices in Selma, Greenville, Troy, and Clayton.  A national level grant through AIDS United was secured in 2011 to improve rural healthcare access.  By matching community donations with the grant award, Medical AIDS Outreach established the eHealth initiative using the expertise of specialized physicians and state of the art telemedicine equipment to impact healthcare in rural communities.  Currently MAO serves 2,000 individuals living with HIV while addressing prevention, testing, and education throughout the coverage area.

Research demonstrates that access to HIV primary healthcare offers cost savings to local healthcare systems.  Community support is vital to continue providing excellent healthcare, awareness, and education in and around the Montgomery community.  The opening of this facility helps magnify the impact of services currently offered and works to leverage community supports that impact healthcare disparities and provide for effective treatment.
