Huntingdon's Pearcy and Anthony generating interest from NFL and CFL scouts

Huntingdon seniors Cody Pearcy and Keith Anthony were record setters during their four seasons with the Hawks’ football program.

Pearcy set the standard for Huntingdon receivers and owns the program’s career marks for receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. On the opposite side of the ball, Anthony was equally impressive as a defensive back and finished his college career as Huntingdon’s career leader in interceptions and second all-time leading tackler.

Now, the two hope to become the first Huntingdon football players to reach the professional level.

During recent weeks, Pearcy has drawn attention from scouts in the National Football League and Anthony has earned an invitation to a Canadian Football League training camp.

“I’ve talked to Keith and I’m pumped for both of us,” Pearcy said. “We’ve played together and grown close at Huntingdon.

Tax filers can benefit by e-filing now, paying later

Tax filers can benefit by e-filing now, paying later

The Internal Revenue Service today reminded tax filers who owe taxes and are purposely waiting until the last-minute to file and pay that they can easily postpone paying but are less likely to make mistakes if they file now, before the April rush.

The IRS estimates that nearly 500,000 Alabamians waited until April to file last year, many of them wanting to hold on to their money until the very last minute.

"Taxpayers can e-file right now and authorize a direct-debit payment for the April 17 deadline," said IRS spokesman Dan Boone. "That way they avoid the April rush, keep their money until the last minute, and get the benefits of e-filing."

E-filing benefits include a lower error rate and faster processing than with paper returns, along with confirmation of receipt by the IRS.

Researchers seek survey participants for oil spill health study

The Alabama Department of Public Health encourages persons who were involved in some aspect of the cleanup after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion to enroll in a study that will look at possible health effects of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The Gulf Long-term Follow-up Study is being conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health. Many agencies, researchers, outside experts and members of the local community have provided input into how the study should be designed and implemented. The study is designed to find answers to the questions that matter to oil spill cleanup workers and area residents.

Additional volunteers are needed for this large study.

Huntingdon baseball comes up short against Emory

Huntingdon baseball comes up short against Emory

Huntingdon gave up two runs in the top of the ninth and dropped a 5-4 game to Emory on Sunday. The loss was the second to the Eagles in two days.

Huntingdon (17-8) tied the game 3-3 in the eighth inning when Jordan Freeman scored on a Tyler Blackwell single. Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth, a Freeman sacrifice fly scored Grant Brown to make it a one-run game with runners on second and third and two outs.

But the Hawks’ comeback attempt came up short.

Trey Smith drew a walk to load the bases before Blackwell worked Emory pitcher Matt McMahon to a full count. McMahon recorded the strikeout to end the game.

Huntingdon’s first two runs came in the fifth inning.
